Casten, The Morton Arboretum Announce $15 Million in Funding For Urban Forestry Initiatives

Washington, D.C. (September 15th, 2023) — U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) announced he has helped secure $15 million in federal funding for The Morton Arboretum in DuPage County.

This funding is provided by the Inflation Reduction Act, which Congressman Casten worked to pass one year ago, and is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s nationwide Urban and Community Forestry Program meant to expand access to trees and green spaces in communities and neighborhoods. The Morton Arboretum’s Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) will award sub-grants exclusively to communities and organizations supporting underserved populations.

“I am thrilled to have secured this funding for the Morton Arboretum through the Inflation Reduction Act,” said Congressman Casten. “Equitable access to trees and greenery makes communities stronger, preserves the beauty of our environment, and combats the effects of climate change. This funding will enhance the health of forests in the community, specifically underserved communities, so Illinoisans can have equitable access to greenery in urban areas.”

"This funding will help improve the lives of people and bolster resilience to climate change, as communities with access to greater tree canopy experience cooler temperatures, better air quality and improved health outcomes," said President and CEO of The Morton Arboretum Jill Koski. "The support of elected officials, civic leaders, and many community partners was instrumental in the Arboretum securing this historic funding to improve the urban forest and benefit underserved Illinois communities," she added.
